What is Ethereum?
Ethereum is a public blockchain network and ether (ETH) is its currency. Thousands of independent nodes run the software, and since 15 September 2022 the chain has been secured by validators who each stake at least 32 ETH, not by miners. No company runs it: ethereum.org states that there is no CEO, board or central authority, and changes to the protocol go through public Ethereum Improvement Proposals. The Ethereum Foundation, a Swiss non-profit based in Zug, funds research and development but does not control or lead the network.
Vitalik Buterin described the project in a white paper in 2013 and the network went live on 30 July 2015. What separates it from Bitcoin is that it runs programs, the smart contracts, which is why stablecoins such as USDT and USDC also circulate on Ethereum as ERC-20 tokens. Every transaction pays a fee in ETH, called gas, and most of that fee is burned by the protocol rather than paid to anyone.
At a bookmaker, “Ethereum” or “Ethereum (ETH)” in the cashier means a deposit of ETH itself to an address on the Ethereum network. You send from your own wallet or from an exchange, the bookmaker credits the amount after a number of confirmations, and withdrawals come back to the address you give. The transfer is final: ethereum.org’s support page says that transactions on the blockchain cannot be reversed by anyone, so an address pasted wrong is money gone.
How to get Ethereum
- Choose a wallet. A wallet is an app or a device that holds the keys to your Ethereum account, not the coins; ethereum.org lists hardware, mobile, browser and desktop wallets, and an exchange account also works because the exchange keeps the keys for you. Write the recovery phrase on paper and keep it off any computer: whoever has it has the funds, and nobody can reset it.
- Buy ETH on an exchange. An exchange sells ETH for euros, pounds or dollars after identity checks and charges its own trading and withdrawal fees, which vary from one service to the next. In the European Union the exchange must hold a MiCA authorisation: the regulation has applied in full since December 2024 and the transition for providers already operating under national rules ended on 1 July 2026.
- Copy the deposit address from the cashier. Choose Ethereum and the bookmaker shows an address starting with 0x, usually with a QR code. Copy or scan it, never type it: ethereum.org warns that typing an address by hand leads to lost funds. Send on the network the cashier names, because ETH on a layer-2 network or on another chain is not interchangeable with ETH on Ethereum, and Ethereum Classic (ETC), which some bookmakers list next to ETH, is a different chain that split off after the DAO fork of July 2016.
- Send a small test amount first. Send a few euros’ worth, wait for the cashier to credit it, then send the rest. The wallet shows the gas fee before you confirm and takes it from your ETH balance on top of the amount sent. An Ethereum transaction has no memo or tag field: the address is all the bookmaker needs.
- Follow the transaction on a block explorer. The wallet gives you a transaction hash; paste it into etherscan.io to see whether it is still pending or already in a block. Blocks arrive every 12 seconds, a block is final after about 15 minutes, and the bookmaker credits the deposit after the number of confirmations its cashier states.
What it costs
Three parties can take something from an Ethereum deposit: the bookmaker, the network and the exchange you bought the coins from. The network fee is the only one that is the same for everyone, and on 19 October 2026 it was close to nothing.
Costs of an Ethereum deposit
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Bookmaker fee on deposits | Usually none; some bookmakers charge a percentage on crypto: check the cashier |
| Bookmaker fee on withdrawals | Usually none; check the cashier before you request one |
| Network fee for sending ETH | 21,000 gas × (base fee + tip); on 19 October 2026 the base fee was 0.041 gwei, about $0.002 a transfer |
| Network fee for sending USDT or USDC on Ethereum (ERC-20) | 65,000 gas, about three times a plain ETH transfer, paid in ETH |
| Tip to the validator (priority fee) | Optional; on 19 October 2026 Etherscan showed 0 gwei with inclusion in about 30 seconds |
| Exchange: buying ETH | Trading fee and spread set by each exchange; not fixed |
| Exchange: withdrawing ETH to a wallet or to the bookmaker | Fee set by each exchange; not fixed |
| ETH price between deposit and bet | Some bookmakers convert ETH to euros or dollars on arrival, others keep the balance in ETH, which moves with the price ($2,434.62 on Etherscan on 19 October 2026) |
| Layer-2 networks | Average transaction cost shown by ethereum.org on 19 October 2026: $0.0015 against $0.021 on Ethereum itself; usable only if the cashier offers that network |
Network fees read on 19 October 2026 on the gas tracker of etherscan.io (snapshot of 08:59 UTC: low, average and high all at 0.041 gwei, priority fee 0, about 30 seconds, $0.002 a transfer) and on the gas pages of ethereum.org (21,000 and 65,000 gas; fee = gas used × (base fee + priority fee); the base fee is burned, the tip goes to the validator). Gas prices change every twelve seconds with demand, so look at the tracker before you send. Exchange fees are those of the service you use and were not read for this page.
Two ways to pay less
Send when the network is quiet and send ETH rather than a token. ethereum.org says gas is cheaper when North America is asleep, and the base fee rises by up to 12.5% a block while blocks are more than half full. Sending ETH uses 21,000 gas; sending USDT or USDC over Ethereum uses 65,000, so if the bookmaker takes both, ETH itself is the cheaper deposit on this network.
Deposit and withdrawal times
Blocks arrive every 12 seconds: ethereum.org divides time into twelve-second slots and one validator is chosen to propose a block in each. Your deposit shows on Etherscan as pending while it waits in the transaction pool, then as confirmed once a block includes it, and each later block adds a confirmation. A block is finalised after about 15 minutes, two epochs of 32 slots, and from then on it cannot be reverted without burning at least a third of all staked ETH. The bookmaker credits the deposit after the number of confirmations its cashier states, so count on a few minutes and at most a quarter of an hour.
Withdrawals wait for the bookmaker’s approval, from minutes to two or three days depending on the operator and on whether your account is verified. Once the bookmaker broadcasts the transaction the ETH is in your wallet within minutes, with no bank between the two of you to add days of its own.
Where you can use it
Ethereum has no country. What the law restricts is the exchange you buy ETH from and the bookmaker’s right to accept it, and that depends on where you live. Five rules to know.
- United Kingdom. The Gambling Commission does not ban crypto-assets, but a licensee that wants to accept them must satisfy the Commission on money laundering and source of funds, report the new payment method as a key event and review its risk assessment (guidance updated 28 March 2023). The Commission does not consider licence applications funded with crypto unless the full history of the funds is shown.
- Malta. A bookmaker licensed by the Malta Gaming Authority needs its prior approval to accept virtual financial assets; coins with built-in anonymisation are prohibited, deposit limits are counted in fiat terms and the operator may not buy, sell or exchange crypto on its own platform (policy of January 2023).
- European Union. The exchange or custody service you buy ETH from must be authorised under MiCA, which has applied in full since December 2024; the transition for providers already operating under national rules ended on 1 July 2026.
- Australia. Since 11 June 2024 online wagering providers may not accept credit cards, credit-related products or digital currencies such as cryptocurrency, with fines of up to AUD 247,500 enforced by the Australian Communications and Media Authority.
- China. A notice of the People’s Bank of China of 15 September 2021 states that virtual currencies have no legal-tender status, that business activities related to them are illegal financial activities and that services provided by overseas exchanges to residents in China are illegal too.
The regulator of each bookmaker is named in the footer of its site and in its Betandlink review. Check that your country is not on the bookmaker’s restricted list before you send coins: the transaction cannot be reversed, and a refund depends on the bookmaker.
Ethereum and welcome bonuses
Read the crypto bonus terms first
Bookmakers that take Ethereum often run a separate crypto welcome offer, counted in USDT or in dollars, with its own minimum deposit and wagering, and the standard sports bonus may exclude crypto deposits. If the offer is in USDT and you deposit ETH, the bookmaker converts at its own rate, and a price move between deposit and bet changes what the bonus is worth. Read the payment clause of the terms before you send.

Questions and answers
Is Ethereum free to use with bookmakers?
Most bookmakers add no fee on ETH deposits, and on 19 October 2026 the network fee for a transfer was about $0.002 (base fee 0.041 gwei on the Etherscan gas tracker). The costs are elsewhere: the trading and withdrawal fees of the exchange where you buy ETH, and the change in the ETH price between deposit and withdrawal.
How long does an Ethereum deposit take to show?
Blocks arrive every 12 seconds and the bookmaker credits the deposit after the confirmations its cashier states; a block is final after about 15 minutes, so a deposit seldom waits longer than that. Withdrawals depend on the bookmaker’s approval, then reach your wallet within minutes of being broadcast.
Which network do I send ETH on?
On the network the cashier names, which for “Ethereum” or “Ethereum (ETH)” is the Ethereum main network. ethereum.org warns that ETH on a layer-2 network or on another chain is not interchangeable with it, so withdraw to Ethereum first or ask the bookmaker whether it accepts that network. Ethereum Classic (ETC) is a separate chain with its own addresses.
Can I get a deposit back if I sent it to the wrong address?
No. ethereum.org’s support page states that transactions on the blockchain are final and cannot be reversed by anyone, and that no company or help desk sits behind the network. Copy or scan the address, never type it, and send a small test amount first.
Who is behind Ethereum?
No company. The software runs on thousands of independent nodes, and since the Merge of September 2022 validators who each stake at least 32 ETH secure the chain. The Ethereum Foundation, a non-profit in Zug, Switzerland, funds development but does not control the network, so what a bettor must guard is the wallet’s recovery phrase and the address pasted into the cashier.
