What is Paysafecard?
Paysafecard is a prepaid code. You buy it in a shop for a fixed amount, in cash or by card at the till, and get a paper voucher with a 16-digit code; online you choose Paysafecard in the cashier, type the code and the amount is taken from its balance. No bank account, no card and, with the bare code, no personal data. A code only pays out: it cannot be topped up and cannot receive money, so winnings go to the PaysafeCard account or by bank transfer.
It started in Vienna in 2000 and belongs to Paysafe, the group that also owns Skrill and Neteller. In the EU the codes are issued by Paysafe Prepaid Services Limited of Dublin, an electronic money institution regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland (registration C185005); in the United Kingdom by Prepaid Services Company Limited of London, authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (900021). Paysafe counts more than 650,000 sales outlets in over 50 countries.
For betting the bare code is not enough. Paysafecard’s help pages state that casinos, poker rooms and betting sites only take payments from a registered PaysafeCard account, the former my paysafecard, which you fill with the codes you buy. Bettors use it to play with a fixed cash budget and to keep betting off their bank statement. The price is the ceiling, €1,000 per payment with the account, and a monthly fee on any code left unused.
How to get Paysafecard
- Buy a code at a sales outlet. The store finder on paysafecard.com lists the shops near you; you pay in cash or by card at the till and get a voucher with the 16-digit code. In Ireland the values are €10, €25, €50 and €100, in the United Kingdom £10, £25, £40, £50, £75 and £100, and an outlet sells up to ten codes at a time.
- Or buy it online. The PIN shop inside the PaysafeCard account sells codes of any amount between €5 and €150, paid by card, bank transfer or the other methods shown at checkout, with no extra fee: a €45.50 code costs €45.50. Online purchase is not offered in every country.
- Open a PaysafeCard account. Registration is free, on paysafecard.com or in the app, and is tied to the country where you live: the Irish terms allow one account per customer, for residents, confirmed by a text to an Irish mobile number. You need it for betting, because a 16-digit code is refused at casinos, poker and betting sites. The Standard account shows its limits after login; the Unlimited tier, which asks for a passport and a second document such as a utility bill, raises them.
- Load the code into the account. Type the 16 digits in the account and the balance moves to it; several codes add up. Do it the day you buy: a code left unused loses €4 a month from the second month, while the account charges nothing until 12 months have passed without a transaction.
- Pay the bookmaker. Choose Paysafecard in the cashier, log in with the e-mail and password of the account and confirm. Up to €1,000 per payment in Ireland, £1,000 in the United Kingdom; the money is on the betting account at once.
What it costs
Between Paysafecard and the bookmaker the service is usually free: Paysafecard charges nothing for paying a merchant or for a payout to the account, and most bookmakers add no fee on Paysafecard deposits. The costs are in the code itself: a maintenance fee if you keep it, a conversion fee if the bookmaker bills in another currency, a refund fee if you want the money back in your bank.
Paysafecard fees in Ireland and the United Kingdom
| Operation | Fee |
|---|---|
| Bookmaker fee on a Paysafecard deposit | 0% at most bookmakers; a merchant fee, where one exists, is shown before you confirm |
| Buying a code in a shop | Face value: €10, €25, €50 or €100 (UK £10 to £100), paid in cash or by card at the till |
| Buying a code online | Any amount from €5 to €150, no extra fee; a PaysafeCard account is needed |
| Opening and using the PaysafeCard account | Free; payments in the account currency cost nothing |
| Maintenance fee on a code | Free for 30 days after purchase, then €4 a month (UK £4) taken from the balance |
| Inactivity fee on the account | €5 a month (UK £5) from the 13th month without a transaction |
| Currency conversion | 3% when one of the two currencies is the euro; 6.09% on a UK code when neither is |
| Refund of an unused balance to your bank | €7.50 per refund (UK £6), deducted from the amount |
| Payout from a bookmaker to the account | Free |
Fees read on 19 October 2026 on the fees and limits page of paysafecard.com for Ireland and in the Irish terms and conditions in force since 26 May 2026; UK figures from the same pages for the United Kingdom. Until May 2026 the maintenance fee was €3 a month, and the help article on fees still describes an older rule, a fee only after 12 months without a transaction: the terms in force are those in the table. Amounts differ by country (€3.30 a month in Austria, for instance), so check the page for yours.
Two ways to pay less
Load every code into the account the day you buy it, and bet in the currency of the code. A €50 code left in a drawer loses €4 a month from the second month, €44 in the first year; the same €50 in the account costs nothing unless it sits untouched for 12 months. A €100 deposit at a bookmaker that bills in pounds loses €3 to conversion before the first bet.
Deposit and withdrawal times
Deposits are instant: the cashier confirms the payment as soon as Paysafecard accepts the code or the account login, and the money is on the betting account at once. Payouts are the weak point. A code cannot receive money. The PaysafeCard account can, at the bookmakers that offer the option, provided the deposit came from that account and the e-mail address you type in the cashier is the one of the account; Paysafecard calls these payouts fast and free but publishes no time, and caps them at €250 a month on a Standard account and €30,000 a year on an Unlimited one. Add the bookmaker’s approval time, from minutes to a few days, before the credit appears.
Where the bookmaker does not pay out to Paysafecard, winnings go by bank transfer to an account in your name; check the withdrawal methods in the cashier before you deposit. Taking money out of the PaysafeCard account itself means a redemption request to Paysafecard with a copy of your ID and the IBAN of a personal bank account; it costs €7.50 and has no published time.
Where you can use it
Paysafecard is sold in 48 countries, those in the country table of paysafecard.com on 19 October 2026: all 27 EU countries, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, Georgia, Moldova, Montenegro and Turkey, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay, Australia and New Zealand. Paysafe puts the sales network at more than 650,000 outlets. Whether a bookmaker offers the method then depends on its licence, so it appears in some cashiers and not in others. Four rules matter for bettors.
- Codes are national. A code is redeemed in the country where it was bought, and a code from another country may be refused when you load it into your account: Paysafecard advises buying in the country where the account is registered. The limit per payment with a bare code is €50 in Ireland and £40 in the United Kingdom; with the account, €1,000 or £1,000.
- Betting needs the account. Because of the rules of the country of registration, casinos, poker rooms and betting sites accept payments only from a registered PaysafeCard account, never from a 16-digit code typed in the cashier. The same page puts the minimum age for gambling payments at 16 to 18 depending on the country; the bookmaker’s own age check applies as well.
- One account, in your own country. The Irish terms allow one account per customer, for residents of Ireland, confirmed by a code sent to an Irish mobile number; the Unlimited tier needs a passport and a second document. The account is not a bank account and pays no interest.
- United Kingdom. The Gambling Commission’s ban on credit cards for gambling, in force since 14 April 2020, covers cards and money loaded into e-wallets from them; its guidance does not mention prepaid vouchers. UK codes come from Prepaid Services Company Limited of London (FCA 900021) with their own tariff: £4 a month maintenance and a £6 refund fee.
If your country is not among the 48, there is no code to buy: Paysafecard’s own words are that where a country is not listed, you cannot pay with it there yet.
Paysafecard and welcome bonuses
Check the bonus terms first
Prepaid vouchers usually count towards a welcome offer, and the methods bookmakers exclude are normally e-wallets such as Skrill and Neteller. Some terms list Paysafecard among the excluded methods all the same. Read the payment clause before the first deposit, and remember that the deposit has to come from a registered PaysafeCard account, not from a bare 16-digit code, so open the account before you buy the code.

Questions and answers
Is Paysafecard free to use with bookmakers?
Paying a bookmaker from a PaysafeCard account is free on Paysafecard’s side, and most bookmakers add no fee. You pay €4 a month on any code not spent within 30 days of purchase, 3% when the bookmaker bills in a currency other than the code’s, and €7.50 if you ask Paysafecard to refund an unused balance to your bank.
Can I withdraw my winnings to Paysafecard?
Not to a code: a code can only be spent. Bookmakers that support payouts to Paysafecard credit the PaysafeCard account you deposited from, free of charge, up to €250 a month on a Standard account and €30,000 a year on an Unlimited one. The others pay by bank transfer to an account in your name.
Why does the bookmaker refuse my 16-digit code?
Because betting sites, casinos and poker rooms only accept payments from a registered PaysafeCard account, as Paysafecard’s help pages state. Open the free account, load the code into it and pay in the cashier with the account login. The minimum age for gambling payments is 16 to 18 depending on the country.
Does a Paysafecard code expire?
No, but it shrinks. A code is free for 30 days after purchase, then €4 a month is taken from its balance (£4 in the United Kingdom). Loaded into a PaysafeCard account the money escapes that fee: the account charges €5 a month only after 12 months without a transaction.
Where can I buy Paysafecard?
In the 48 countries of the provider’s table on 19 October 2026: the whole EU, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Turkey, the Gulf, the United States, Canada, Mexico and four countries of South America, Australia and New Zealand, through more than 650,000 shops. Account holders can also buy online, any amount from €5 to €150 at no extra cost.
