Nigeria Betting Payment Methods
Nigeria licenses sports betting state by state since the Supreme Court struck down the federal lottery law on 22 November 2024, and pays with Verve cards, bank transfers and phone numbers rather than with the wallets of Europe. Here is what the 47 bookmakers open to Nigerian players, out of the 65 reviewed on Betandlink, list in their cashiers and which rules apply to each method.

Is online betting legal in Nigeria?
Yes, with a licence from the state you play in. Until 2024 two layers of licence existed: the federal National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC), created by the National Lottery Act 2005 and advising the President on national licences and permits for lotteries and sports betting, and the state regulators, such as the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA) under the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority Law 2021. On 22 November 2024 the Supreme Court of Nigeria, in suit SC/1/2008 (Attorney General of Lagos State and others against the Attorney General of the Federation), held that lottery regulation falls outside the Exclusive Legislative List of the 1999 Constitution and nullified the National Lottery Act in its entirety: in the words of the Lagos regulator, only the states of the federation have the power to regulate lottery and all gaming activities in Nigeria.
Lagos drew the consequences at once. On 13 December 2024 the LSLGA wrote that there is no such thing as a “Remote Gaming License” in Nigeria, that the “now-defunct” NLRC has no authority to issue or oversee one, that operators holding such a permit are in possession of mere paper without legal backing, and that they must regularise their position with the LSLGA or the regulator of their own state or face shutdown. The National Assembly answered with a Central Gaming Bill that would have created a federal remote gaming licence; it passed its third reading in 2025, the state regulators and the Lagos Attorney General said it violated the Supreme Court judgment, and on 26 January 2026 the LSLGA’s chief executive wrote that President Tinubu had formally declined assent to it. On 19 October 2026 the NLRC’s site still shows national sports-betting permits, without dates, while Lagos publishes a page on how to check whether an operator is licensed there (11 September 2026).
In Lagos, whose authority calls itself the foremost gaming regulator in the country, gaming is legal but every operator must hold an LSLGA licence. The Authority’s notice of 17 September 2025 lists ten categories, Online Sports Betting and Online Casino among them, alongside public online lottery, scratch cards, casinos, gaming machines, pools betting, promotional competitions, business-to-business services and gamification. Each state has its own law and regulator; the Federation of State Gaming Regulators of Nigeria, chaired by the LSLGA’s chief executive, met on 28 November 2024 to coordinate them after the judgment. No official page read for this guide says anything about the player who bets on a foreign site, and nothing readable on the tax authorities’ sites covers the taxation of betting winnings, so neither point is stated here.
Which payment methods work from Nigeria
Of the 47 bookmakers open to Nigeria, 40 list Visa, 38 Mastercard, 35 Neteller, 34 Bitcoin, 31 Ethereum and 31 Skrill; 23 take Paysafecard, 17 Google Pay, 15 MiFinity, 15 Payz, 12 Apple Pay, 12 Jeton, 10 Revolut Pay, 6 PayPal, 6 USDT and one, 22Bet, Verve. None lists American Express, Diners Club, UnionPay or RuPay. The table below gives the full count; these are the rules that decide what a Nigerian can actually use.
- Cards. The Central Bank of Nigeria’s 2020 guidelines on electronic payment channels say nothing about betting merchants. What they do say matters at every cashier: a bank may enable a card for web payments only when the customer asks, every web transaction needs a second factor of authentication (on a Verve card, the Safetoken code sent by SMS to the number your bank holds), the daily limit on each channel is set by your bank, a failed or disputed web transaction must be refunded within 48 hours, and the merchant may not add a surcharge. A Verve Classic is a debit card; the card bans of the United Kingdom and Australia concern credit cards only.
- Apple Pay and Google Pay. Nigeria is on Google’s list of countries where Google Pay works with websites and apps, so the 17 cashiers that show it work with a Nigerian card. Nigeria is not on Apple’s list of countries that support Apple Pay: the 12 cashiers that show Apple Pay are of no use to a card issued there.
- Revolut Pay. Revolut does not open personal accounts for residents of Nigeria, so the button that 10 bookmakers show cannot be used from there.
- E-wallets. eZeeWallet does not open accounts for residents of Nigeria. Sticpay does, and is one of the few wallets with a local route: a load by Nigerian bank transfer costs 2% to 4% and a withdrawal to a Nigerian bank by local transfer 1.5% to 2.5% plus a fixed amount. AstroPay has an identity guide for Nigeria and runs there under its Rest of the World terms. MiFinity and Jeton do not list Nigeria among the countries they refuse.
- PayPal. It admits gambling merchants only with its prior approval and only where operator and customers are in jurisdictions where the activity is permitted by law. Six bookmakers list it; the cashier of each is the only check.
- Cryptocurrency. The 34 bookmakers that take Bitcoin include the five that take only crypto (22Bit, 1xBit, Bet25, Rainbet, Dexsport); USDT appears at 6. The Central Bank’s rules for banks’ dealings with virtual-asset providers were not readable on its site on 19 October 2026 and are not summarised here.
- Vouchers and cash. Paysafecard is listed by 23 bookmakers but Nigeria is not among the 48 countries where it is sold. CashtoCode is the one cash route: since 5 May 2021 its barcodes are paid in naira at the ServPoint agents of Globasure, and two bookmakers in the list, Pinnacle and Paripesa, offer it.

Local payment methods
Nigeria pays with its own card scheme, with instant bank transfers and with the phone number. In the cashiers of the 47 bookmakers that shows as Verve at one (22Bet), Payattitude at two (Helabet and Linebet) and a bank transfer at 21; no bookmaker names USSD, OPay, PalmPay, Paystack or Flutterwave in its list.
- Verve. The domestic card scheme of Interswitch, more than 100 million cards issued, accepted at every ATM in Nigeria and online wherever the bookmaker’s payment provider is connected to it; the Global version runs on the Discover network abroad. Each web payment is confirmed with a Safetoken, the six-digit code sent by SMS to the number your bank holds. Issuing or replacing a card costs N1,000 under the Central Bank’s Guide to Charges, and the card carries no monthly fee on a current account.
- Payattitude. Pay with your phone number from the bank account linked to it: you type the number at the cashier and approve the transaction in the Payattitude app, in your bank’s app or by USSD. The help centre of Paystack, the gateway through which Nigerian businesses accept it, lists Access Bank, Fidelity, First Bank, Heritage, Hope PS Bank, Sterling, Suntrust, UBA, Zenith, Ecobank and Accion as the banks it works with, and says recurring payments are not supported.
- Bank transfer. Interbank transfers run on NIBSS Instant Payment, the real-time system of the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System, owned by the licensed banks and the Central Bank. The Guide to Charges caps what your bank may take for an electronic transfer: N10 below N5,000, N25 from N5,001 to N50,000, N50 above that. A bookmaker that lists a bank transfer gives you its account details in the cashier and credits the deposit once it has matched the transfer to your account.
- USSD. The bank codes dialled from any phone move money without data or an app; the Central Bank’s Guide to Charges says the current NIP transfer charges apply to USSD transactions. No bookmaker in the list names USSD as a deposit method, but a USSD transfer to the bookmaker’s account is a bank transfer like any other.
How to deposit and withdraw from Nigeria
- Keep the account in naira. 20 of the 47 bookmakers offer an NGN account; at the others every deposit and payout is converted by your bank, which publishes its own rate, and a card in foreign currency costs $10 a year under the Guide to Charges.
- Switch the card on for the web first. Under the Central Bank’s guidelines your bank enables a card for web payments only when you ask, confirms each payment with a second factor such as a one-time password, and sets the daily limit; make sure the bank has your current phone number before you deposit.
- Check the state licence. In Lagos the LSLGA publishes how to check whether an operator is licensed (11 September 2026) and says every operator must hold its licence; since the Supreme Court judgment of 22 November 2024 a federal permit alone is, in the Lagos regulator’s words, paper without legal backing.
- Cheapest route: a bank transfer or a Verve debit card. An electronic transfer costs at most N10, N25 or N50 depending on the amount, a Verve payment nothing beyond the card, and the merchant may not surcharge; the e-wallets of Europe add their own fees and conversions on top.
- The identity check is the bookmaker’s. No official page read for this guide sets a deadline for it, so each bookmaker’s own terms say when it verifies name, date of birth and address, normally before the first withdrawal; register in your own name and withdraw to an account or card in that name.
- Count the days on a disputed card deposit. A failed or disputed web card transaction must be refunded within 48 hours under the Central Bank’s guidelines; the guidelines set no such deadline for a transfer, so copy the bookmaker’s account details from the cashier rather than from a message.

Questions and answers
Who licenses online sports betting in Nigeria?
The states. On 22 November 2024 the Supreme Court held that lottery and gaming regulation falls outside the federal Exclusive Legislative List and nullified the National Lottery Act 2005; in Lagos the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority licenses Online Sports Betting under its 2021 law, and the Central Gaming Bill that would have restored a federal remote gaming licence was not signed by the President.
Which local payment methods do Nigerian bettors use?
Verve debit cards, instant bank transfers on NIBSS Instant Payment and Payattitude, which pays from a bank account with the phone number. A transfer costs at most N10 to N50 under the Central Bank’s Guide to Charges. In the data one bookmaker lists Verve, two Payattitude and 21 a bank transfer.
Does Apple Pay work at bookmakers from Nigeria?
No. Nigeria is not among the countries and regions on Apple’s list for Apple Pay, so the 12 cashiers that show it cannot be used with a Nigerian card. Google Pay does list Nigeria, and 17 bookmakers in the list take it, for deposits only.
